about

13P (Thirteen Playwrights, Inc.) was formed in 2003 by 13 midcareer playwrights concerned about what the trend of endless readings and new play development programs is doing to the texture and ambition of new American plays. We decided we were ready to take matters into our own hands.

13P realizes full productions of new plays. The resources of the company are placed at the disposal of the playwright at work, who serves as the company's artistic director during the production of her play.

13P was the recipient of a 2005 Obie Grant. In their citation, the judges wrote: "Not since Circle Repertory have we seen playwrights in New York forging a home for each other."

13P's productions are made possible, in part, through generous support from The Friends of 13P, The National Endowment for the Arts, The MAP Fund, a program of Creative Capital supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation, The Greenwall Foundation, The Jerome Foundation, The New York State Council on the Arts, The Fan Fox & Leslie R. Samuels Foundation, The James Kirkwood Award of the Dramatists Guild Fund, The Daniel M. Neidich & Brooke Garber Foundation, The Nancy Quinn Fund, a project of A.R.T./New York, The Katherine Dalglish Foundation, The John Golden Fund, Off Broadway Angels, The Susan Stein Shiva Foundation, The Dramatists Guild Fund, The Edward F. Albee Foundation, The Edith C. Blum Foundation, The Posner-Wallace Foundation, The Tulchin Family Foundation, The Village Voice Obie Awards, and Samuel French, Inc.

WE DON’T DEVELOP PLAYS.* *(WE DO THEM.)
"I would give anything to be the 14th P." I would give anything to be the 14th P.

"13P is a model for the future of new plays. It ensures that they will actually get produced, and let's face it, that's radical." 13P is a model for the future of new plays. It ensures that they will actually get produced, and let's face it, that's radical.

"A fine and intelligent idea in this day of institutional blandness. These playwrights remain unawed by the difficulty of pursuing an aggressivel non-corporate, non-careerist path." "Every single playwright in 13P has a voice to be reckoned with; together they are thunder on the mountain of the American theater or, better, a rumble in the earth signaling seismic shift."
